Description
Freshly baked blintzes, bagels with lox and cream cheese, and a cooking competition that challenges South Sound cooks to match their skills at preparing traditional Jewish dishes. A community charity fundraiser that runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Blintzapalooza is doubly special this year - the 25th anniversary of Blintzapalooza and the 75th anniversary of the Temple, which began as a small frame building at Jefferson and 8th Avenue.
Proceeds have always benefited community charities, but this year the congregation is asking the public to help select one of the beneficiaries. Two of them will be GRuB an urban farming program -- and Sidewalk an Interfaith Works prooject that helps the homeless. The third charity will be selected in an online vote at http://choose-a-palooza.com. The possible selections include all of the organizations that benefited from the event's 25-year history.
This year’s cooking competition will center on Kuchen (kook-un) a German-Yiddish cake, ofteen baked with fruit and served with sour cream or cinnamon. In fact, as Kuchen became popular in the United States, it anglicized its name and became better known as "coffee cake," not kaffeekuchen.
Kuchen can be entered in the competition in several categories. Please bring your entry to the Temple by 11 a.m., with judging expected to take place at about noon. Winners will be announced at about 12:30 p.m. Basically, any dough-based baked pastry is eligible. These would include: coffee-cake like pastry, cheese-cake like pastry, pie-like pastry with a thick cakey crust, flat fruit cakes or rolled-pastry. Fillings, icings and toppings are acceptable.
